Damien Noir — Between Worlds

#2015-10-09 Bursary Testimonial

Receiving this scholarship has been far more than just financial support — it’s been a source of validation and encouragement during a pivotal point in my life. After 6 years of professional experience post my undergraduate study, I decided to take a risk and return to higher education in the midst of a quarter-life crisis and career break. This decision came with uncertainties — both financial and emotional — but the bursary made me feel that I truly deserve to take that risk.

Before receiving the scholarship, I often questioned whether stepping away from a stable career to pursue academic study was reckless. The financial pressure was real, and so was the fear of failure. This award eased those worries and allowed me to focus on learning and rediscovering my intellectual curiosity without being clouded by anxiety about money or time lost. It has restored my confidence in my ability to thrive in an academic environment after years in the professional world.

My current goal is to complete this transition from business/financial advisory background to psychology via this conversion course, with the intention of moving toward a career in private consultancy or counselling work — a field where I can apply both academic insight and lived experience. At the same time, this year of study has reawakened my love for research and writing; if my academic performance continues to excite and inspire me, I’m open to pursuing a PhD as the next step.

Outside of study, I continue to participate in freelance creative writings, volunteering with the Mind and offering tennis coaching sessions, which keeps me balanced and connected to the world beyond academia.

To the donor, I want to express my deepest gratitude. Your generosity hasn’t just relieved financial pressure — it has reignited a sense of purpose and belief in my path. You’ve given me the confidence to embrace uncertainty, explore my potential fully, and view this new chapter not as a detour, but as a deliberate step toward a more meaningful direction.
